About Thai AirAsia X
Thai AirAsia X is the long-haul member of the AirAsia family in Thailand, flying under the code XJ from Bangkok's Don Mueang airport. It is a separate airline from Thai AirAsia, the short-haul carrier, though the two share the AirAsia website and app and are often marketed together. Wikipedia gives its ownership as 49% AirAsia Group Berhad and 51% Tassapon Bijleveld with other Thai investors.
History
AirAsia X signed a shareholders' agreement with Tassapon Bijleveld and Julpas Krueospon on 18 September 2013 to form the company. It received its air operator's certificate on 3 February 2014 and flew its first service, Bangkok to Seoul with an Airbus A330-300, on 17 June 2014. Osaka and Tokyo followed on 1 September 2014. Middle East flights to Tehran and Muscat were dropped in December 2016.
The pandemic years were difficult. Domestic flights were cancelled in July 2021 under lockdown measures, and on 19 May 2022 the airline filed with Thailand's Central Bankruptcy Court; Wikipedia records that flights continued as usual. It moved its Bangkok operation to Suvarnabhumi in 2022 and back to Don Mueang from 1 October 2024.
A smaller network in 2026
The airline has cut back sharply during 2026. Shanghai Pudong flights were suspended from 17 April 2026, and schedule filings reported by AeroRoutes showed Bangkok departures for May and June 2026 falling from 459 to 235, with fewer flights to Almaty, Delhi, Osaka and Tokyo. The Seoul route, its first, was handed to Thai AirAsia in February 2026. As of October 2026, Wikipedia's route table lists Almaty, Delhi, Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo and Tokyo Narita as current, with earlier Australian, Chinese, Georgian, Croatian and Iranian routes shown as ended. AeroRoutes reported on 29 September 2026 that the airline planned six weekly scheduled charter flights to Harbin between 15 December 2026 and 24 January 2027, up from three weekly the previous winter.
On 19 October 2026 the two Thai AirAsia airlines launched a joint year-end sale covering 53 routes to 46 cities, with Tokyo and Osaka among the featured destinations, which confirms Thai AirAsia X was still selling flights at that date.
Fleet
Thai AirAsia X flies only the Airbus A330-300. A Wikipedia fleet table dated August 2025 lists 11 aircraft, each with 12 premium and 365 economy seats. The table is more than a year old, and no newer official figure was found.
