VietJet Air is the trading name of Vietjet Aviation JSC, a Vietnamese low-cost airline with its head office in Hanoi. Its shareholders include Sovico Holdings and HDBank alongside other institutional and individual investors, and the company has been listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange since its initial public offering on 28 February 2017. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao has been president and chief executive since December 2011.
VietJet took a long time to get off the ground. It received its first approval from Vietnam's Ministry of Finance in November 2007 as the country's first privately owned airline, but its launch was pushed back several times. In February 2010 the Malaysian group AirAsia announced plans to take a 30% stake through a joint venture, and in October 2011 it withdrew, citing a failure to obtain Vietnamese regulatory approvals. VietJet went ahead on its own and flew its first service on 25 December 2011, from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi.
The airline's growth since then has been built on large aircraft orders and expansion outside Vietnam:
VietJet also sits at the centre of a small family of affiliated airlines. Thai Vietjet flies in Thailand under its own certificate, and in May 2025 VietJet and Qazaq Air announced a partnership to form Vietjet Qazaqstan. Both are separate from the Vietnamese operation described here.
VietJet sells a low base fare and charges for checked baggage and other extras, with carry-on allowances that vary by fare class and route. One distinctive feature is its use of aircraft liveries as paid advertising space for sponsors. According to the company's investor relations site, at the end of 2025 VietJet flew 254 routes, 52 domestic and 202 international, linking Vietnam and Thailand with markets including Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Japan, India and Australia. The company says it has carried more than 250 million passengers since 2011. It is a member of IATA and holds IOSA safety certification.
Recent route additions include services from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to Beijing Daxing and Guangzhou from spring 2025, and a Ho Chi Minh City–Colombo route launched in August 2026 with four round trips a week, with an extension to the Maldives planned.
Data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, reported by Viet Nam News on 25 September 2026, put VietJet's Vietnamese-registered fleet at 107 aircraft: 83 Airbus A321s, 16 A320s and 8 A330s. That count excludes aircraft flown by Thai Vietjet and Vietjet Qazaqstan. The company's investor site says it has close to 600 further aircraft on order, both narrowbody and widebody. Between April and October 2025 VietJet also flew two COMAC C909 regional jets wet-leased from Chengdu Airlines on domestic routes, the first Chinese-built jets used on domestic flights in Vietnam; the lease was renewed in November 2025.
On 20 April 2025 VietJet took over its own ground handling at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport from Saigon Ground Services. The switch coincided with a holiday peak and a domestic terminal change, and hundreds of flights were delayed. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam instructed the airline to deploy full staff and equipment and coordinate with other handlers. Later in 2025 the unit was reorganised as Airport NEO Ground Services Company.
