Volaris is the trading name of Controladora Vuela Compañía de Aviación, a Mexican airline group based in Santa Fe, Mexico City, whose shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange and the Mexican stock exchange. It describes itself as an ultra-low-cost carrier with point-to-point operations, and it aims its marketing at people visiting friends and relatives and at price-conscious business and leisure travellers. A large part of that market is travel between Mexico and the United States.
Work on the airline began in August 2005 under the name Vuela Airlines. Its first shareholders were Grupo Televisa, Carlos Slim's Inbursa, TACA Airlines and the Discovery Americas fund. Tickets went on sale in January 2006, and the first scheduled flight, Toluca to Tijuana, operated on 13 March 2006. Televisa and Inbursa sold out in 2010, and the US investment firm Indigo Partners, led by Bill Franke, took a stake. Indigo has also backed other ultra-low-cost airlines, including Frontier.
Volaris began serving Mexico City in September 2010, picking up routes left by the collapse of Aerocalifornia and Mexicana. In 2011 it moved its main hub from Toluca to Guadalajara, which it also used as a gateway for US flights. Its fare structure moved to an unbundled model in 2013, when food, checked baggage and seat selection were taken out of the base fare. A Costa Rican subsidiary based in San José started flying in November 2016. Since 2018 Volaris has had a codeshare with Frontier Airlines, which lets frequent flyers earn points across both.
Volaris reports more than 600 daily flight segments on more than 244 routes, linking 46 Mexican cities with 29 cities in the United States and Central and South America. Its operating bases are Cancún, Culiacán, Guadalajara, León/Del Bajío, Mexicali, Mexico City, Monterrey and Tijuana. In the second quarter of 2026 it carried 8.1 million booked passengers, up 7.1% on a year earlier; international traffic grew faster than domestic.
The fleet is all Airbus A320 family, in a single-class, high-density layout. At 30 June 2026 the group had 155 aircraft:
That gives a 68% share of new-engine (neo) aircraft, an average age of 6.8 years and an average of 200 seats per aircraft. In the second quarter it retired four A320ceos and added two A320neos and two A321neos. Like other operators of the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine, it has had aircraft grounded for engine inspections, and its 2026 outlook assumes compensation from Pratt & Whitney for them.
In December 2025 Volaris and its domestic rival Viva announced plans to form a new Mexican airline group. Under the proposal both airlines would keep their own operating certificates and brands under a shared holding company, with the aim of lowering fleet and financing costs. The companies said closing was expected in 2026, subject to regulatory and shareholder approval. At the time of writing the deal had not been reported as completed. Enrique Beltranena is president and chief executive of Volaris.
