Baggage & fees

Checked · varies by route and date

Eurowings' allowances depend on the fare: Basic, Smart or BIZclass.

  • Small underseat bag (all fares): maximum 40 x 30 x 25 cm, for example a laptop bag, handbag or small backpack. Infants under 2 on a lap get a second small bag.
  • Large cabin bag: maximum 55 x 40 x 23 cm and up to 8 kg. Not included in Basic but can be added; included in BIZclass. On full flights, compliant cabin bags may be checked into the hold free of charge.
  • Checked bags: Basic includes none; Smart includes one bag of up to 23 kg; BIZclass includes two bags of up to 32 kg each. Extra bags of up to 12 kg, 23 kg or 32 kg can be added online or through the call centre.
  • Limits: no more than five checked bags per passenger, each up to 32 kg. Infants (0–24 months) get a checked bag, and up to two items such as prams, buggies and child seats per child up to age 11 travel free in the hold.

Baggage can be added online up to two hours before departure. Source: Eurowings, "Hand baggage" and "Checked baggage" pages, read on 24 October 2026.

About Eurowings

Eurowings is the Lufthansa Group's point-to-point airline for Europe, headquartered in Düsseldorf. It does not describe itself as an ultra-low-cost carrier. Its own company page calls it a "value carrier" for leisure and business travellers and says it distinguishes itself from the ultra-low-cost segment through booking options, extras and customer services. In practice that places it among the hybrid airlines: fares come in three levels (Basic, Smart and BIZclass), with the cheapest including only a small under-seat bag, while the top tier includes checked bags and other extras. Frequent flyers earn Miles & More, the Lufthansa Group programme that replaced Eurowings' own Boomerang Club in 2022.

Flights are sold under one brand but operated by two certificate holders: Eurowings GmbH in Germany and its subsidiary Eurowings Europe, which flies from bases in other European countries.

From regional feeder to low-cost brand

The present company has had several lives:

  • 1990–1994: formed from the merger of two commuter airlines, Nürnberger Flugdienst and Reise- und Industrieflug; scheduled flying with ATR turboprops began on 1 January 1994.
  • 2001–2011: Lufthansa took a 24.9% stake in 2001, effective control in 2005 and full ownership in 2011. For much of this period Eurowings flew regional routes for Lufthansa, and in 2010 it moved its head office from Dortmund to Düsseldorf.
  • 2014–2015: Lufthansa decided to turn Eurowings into its low-cost brand. The first Airbus A320 entered service on 1 February 2015, and by the end of 2015 Germanwings' routes and sales had been folded into Eurowings. The last Bombardier CRJ900 regional jet left the fleet in February 2017.
  • 2015–2021: a long-haul operation to the Caribbean, Asia and the US was tried from Cologne, Düsseldorf and Munich; it was ended in 2021 and the routes passed to a separate group airline, Eurowings Discover.

Network

Eurowings says it flies to around 150 destinations in more than 50 countries, from 13 international bases, with Düsseldorf as its largest base and Mallorca among its main leisure markets. Berlin Brandenburg has been the focus of recent growth: in summer 2026 it served around 50 destinations from Berlin for the first time, and its winter 2026/27 schedule lists 38 from the German capital. In December 2024 it announced route cuts at Hamburg and Dortmund, citing costs in the German market.

Fleet

The fleet is made up of Airbus A320-family aircraft: A319s, A320s, A320neos, A321s and A321neos, seating between 144 and 232 passengers. The company page puts the total at around 100 aircraft. Wikipedia's table for May 2026, which covers Eurowings GmbH only and excludes Eurowings Europe, lists 90. From 2027 Eurowings is due to receive 40 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft with 189 seats, allocated from a Lufthansa Group order, to replace older A319s and A320s. During peaks it also uses aircraft and crews leased from partner airlines.

2026

Eurowings reported more than ten million passengers in the first half of 2026, on 75,000 flights at an average load factor of 85.3%. It said the Middle East conflict had forced short-notice schedule changes and pushed up fuel costs, while demand shifted towards the western Mediterranean. The first half also included strikes by the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit. Matthias Spohr, formerly chief executive of Lufthansa Aviation Training, became chief operating officer on 1 October 2026.
