About 9 Air
9 Air is a low-cost airline based in Guangzhou, in southern China. Its registered name is Jiuyuan Airlines, and its main base is Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. It was set up in 2014 as a subsidiary of Juneyao Air, and a source cited by Wikipedia reports that Juneyao later bought the remaining 3% of the shares, making 9 Air a wholly owned subsidiary.
History
The company was founded on 12 February 2014. Its first aircraft, a leased Boeing 737-800, arrived in Guangzhou on 30 August 2014, and the first flight, a charter from Guangzhou to Zhanjiang, operated on 2 December 2014. Daily scheduled services began on 15 January 2015 on a Guangzhou–Wenzhou–Harbin route. Boeing delivered the first aircraft owned by 9 Air, a 737-800, on 15 July 2016, and the first 737 MAX arrived on 30 October 2018.
International flying has been tried in stages. A Guangzhou–Sihanoukville route to Cambodia opened on 8 July 2019 but was no longer operated by June 2020. In March 2020 the airline flew a cargo charter between China and Myanmar, and on 31 March 2020 it gained approval from China's aviation regulator to carry cargo in the passenger cabin.
Business model
All aircraft are fitted with a single economy cabin. Wikipedia describes extra-legroom seats sold as an option, with meals and soft drinks available to buy on board. The airline's own baggage rules could not be read for this profile, so allowances are not described here.
Network
Wikipedia states that, as of April 2026, the airline served destinations in six countries in East and South-east Asia; its infobox gives a much higher number of individual destinations. On 24 October 2026 the fare listings on 9 Air's own website showed flights from Guangzhou to a long list of mainland cities, among them Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Harbin, Urumqi and Kashgar, and to Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur abroad. Every route in that listing started in Guangzhou.
Fleet
9 Air flies only Boeing 737s. A Wikipedia fleet table dated August 2025 lists 27 aircraft: 22 Boeing 737-800s and five 737 MAX 8s, all with 189 seats, and no outstanding orders. The table is more than a year old, and no newer official fleet figure was found.
Recent activity
The news section of the airline's website was last updated with dated items in autumn 2025, mostly fare filings and passenger notices, including a September 2025 notice that all domestic tickets would use electronic travel itineraries. The website was taking bookings for travel in October and November 2026 when it was checked on 24 October 2026.
