About Arajet
Arajet is a low-cost airline from the Dominican Republic, headquartered in Santo Domingo, with bases at Santo Domingo's Las Américas airport and at Punta Cana. It flies Boeing 737 MAX 8s to North America, the Caribbean, Central America and South America. Its founder and chief executive is Víctor Pacheco Méndez.
From Dominican Wings to Arajet
The company began as Dominican Wings, which received its air operator's certificate from the Dominican civil aviation authority in late 2014 and was authorised to fly charters to Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina. Its first aircraft, an Airbus A320, was delivered on 3 May 2015. In early 2018 it announced a move from charters to scheduled low-cost flights, and in September 2021 Pacheco Méndez and co-founder Mike Powell announced the new name, Arajet. In November 2021 the Dominican Civil Aviation Board approved 30 new international routes.
The first Boeing 737 MAX 8, named Pico Duarte after the Caribbean's highest mountain, arrived at Las Américas on 3 March 2022. Arajet was formally launched on 14 March 2022 at an event with President Luis Abinader, where Boeing announced an order for 20 737 MAX aircraft with options for 15 more. The airline's backers include Bain Capital and the aircraft lessor Griffin Global Asset Management, and the president said it would be majority funded with Dominican capital. Commercial flights began on 15 September 2022 with a flight to Barranquilla, Colombia.
Fleet
Arajet flies only the Boeing 737 MAX 8. It said on 1 June 2026 that it had received its 16th 737 MAX on 31 May 2026 and expected to have 17 by the end of 2026, adding that it remained in close coordination with Boeing and that its growth plans were on track. In September 2026 the airline told Forbes Argentina it planned nine more aircraft in 2027 under its Boeing contract.
Network in 2026
Most of Arajet's network connects other countries in the Americas with the Dominican Republic, and many passengers change planes at Punta Cana or Santo Domingo. In September 2026 the airline said it had carried more than 1.8 million passengers between September 2025 and September 2026, 58% more than a year before, and that it planned to serve more than 35 destinations in 20 countries.
- 5 October 2026: Punta Cana–Guayaquil (Ecuador) restarted, twice weekly.
- 9 October 2026: Mendoza–Punta Cana (Argentina) restarted, three times a week. As of September 2026 Arajet ran 32 weekly flights linking Buenos Aires, Rosario and Córdoba with Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, and planned to resume Santo Domingo–Buenos Aires.
