After much media speculation, AirAsia said on Tuesday that it would set up a low fares airline with a number of e-commerce stores in Japan such as Rakuten, the biggest online retailer in Japan. In an interesting move for the online retailer, they have acquired 18% of Air Asia Japan as part of the deal.

One would would assume Rakuten have access to a large client base which would give them an ahead start during the launch phase.

Air Asia Japan will comence flights with a fleet of Airbus A320 to both locally and international destination. No base has been confirmed yet. The new carrier  begin operations within 12 months.

This announcement is a turnaround from the recent collapse of a proposed relationship with Japans largest carrier Air Nippon Airways.
